Sante Winelands Review

It was with great excitement that I approached the gates of Sante Resort in the Cape Winelands. A few years ago I had spent a glorious fun filled weekend at the resort and spa with a few of my close girlfriends. Sante is the perfect girls’ weekend getaway – set amongst the vineyards with stunning vistas overlooking the Franschhoek Mountains, flowing lawns, a choice of indoor and outdoor swimming pools and fabulous food – all within an hour’s drive of Cape Town CBD.  These qualities make Sante the perfect destination spa.

Sante re-opened in July last year and the operation of the spa was taken over by the Simply Spa group in January this year. Chatting with Spa Manager, Friena Beukes, she told me that since then she has seen a tremendous increase in clients and it continues to grow. The day that I was visited there was a huge delegation of both international and local conference guests who were staying at the resort for a week.

My day started at 10.30am with a glass of bubbly and a Dr Fish nibble for my feet. This is the second time that I have experienced the Dr Fish nibble and as someone who does not enjoy manicure and pedicure treatments, I have to say the Dr Fish nibble is most certainly one of my favourite spa experiences and I personally would happily choose have my hands and feet nibbled by those delightful little fish over a traditional pedicure treatment. They perform the best exfoliation that anyone could possibly ask for, and you know that only the areas where there is dry skin will be exfoliated and healthy soft skin will not be removed. For a girl’s day out at the spa I would highly recommend a Dr Fish nibble – it is fun, ticklish, something completely different and will definitely have you in fits of giggles.

For my next treatment I was taken upstairs to the large treatment rooms that house the huge hydrotherapy tubs, pedicure thrones and 2 treatment beds.

Carrying the vineyard theme through to the treatment rooms, the décor includes the use of old wine vats as tables and wall features and to compliment the surroundings of the Winelands, VinAqua wine therapy products are used in all body treatments. I was treated to a VinAqua spa body treatment which consisted of a 30 minute grape seed body polish, a 15 minute soak in a pinotage bath which included colour therapy and a Restorative Body Cocooning Wrap. After my body was re-jevenuated and relaxed it was time for my Facial Treatment. My therapist recommended The Theravine Pinotage Deluxe anti-ageing Facial which included a cooling, skin tightening mask. My face was brighter and my skin felt radiant for days after.

The first floor of Sante spa houses the gym, Dr Fish nibble room, welcome lounge, relaxation area, large heated hydrotherapy pool, ozone treatment pod, Jacuzzi and reception whilst on the second floor there are experience showers, steam room with colour therapy, sauna, Kniepp room, Hammam and another relaxation area. There are a total of 14 treatment rooms.

Lunch is served either in the Spa Café, the central courtyard or in the main hotel restaurant. I chose to dine in the courtyard and enjoyed a superb green salad. With 20 years of international experience, Guest Relations Manager Jose Fernandes ensures that the service both spa and hotel guests receive is absolutely faultless. His attention to detail is impeccable – including providing blankets for guests when dining outside. The hotel has a total of 10 rooms and there are numerous self-catering villas in the resort. The main restaurant serves both the hotel guests, villas and spa. It is wonderful to know that once again we have a true destination spa in the Western Cape.
