The 11th annual Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Spa Awards hosted by Les Nouvelles Esthetiques South Africa in association with Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Paris, was held on Sunday the 26 July 2015, at the prestigious Maslow Hotel, Sandton. Johannesburg.

The Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Spa Awards Gala Dinner evening was filled with excitement and glamour as some of the industries most respected and well-known names and media came together to acknowledge their peers. Celebrating in true Mexican Fiesta style, with En Fuego, a fabulous new South African based salsa band performing authentic New York-Style Salsa and Latin Jazz, with a strong element of Afro Cuban.

Through the success of the previous awards, the Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Spa Awards increases in its stature each year, providing the South African and International Spa Visitors and Media with a comprehensive choice of award winning spas, and a reliable source of spa information and recommendations, within South Africa.

The 2015 Spa Awards consisted of six (6) Categories, namely Day Spa, Hotel Spa, Boutique Hotel Spa, Unique Spa Concept, Safari Spa and Aesthetic/Medi Spa categories.

Day Spas

The Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Spa Awards Day Spa Category Finalists were:

Shambala Wellness Spa in Walmer, Port Elizabeth. Shambala means a Place of Peace, Tranquillity and Happiness. The winner of the Day Spa Category was Aronia Day Spa, situated in Houghton, Johannesburg. The spa was developed as a sanctuary to remind us that nature surrounds us, lives in us & we live in nature. The distinct spa rituals treat the senses to a journey of self-discovery through the Aroniatherapy Gardens. Hydrotherapy features include a heated outdoor swimming pool and Rasul chamber. Unique add-on experiences include shirodara, vichy and ayurvedic treatments.

Hotel Spas

The Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Spa Awards Hotel Spa Category Finalists were:

The Spa at Cape Grace is a quiet, spacious and welcoming oasis on the top floor of the hotel. The spa includes an indoor heated pool, fitness centre, healing herb garden, unique hydrotherapy cold water walkway, a sauna area and steam room.

The winner of the Hotel Spa Category was Touch Spa @ Seasons Sport and Spa

Set in 300 acres of natural indigenous bushveld on the slopes of the Magaliesberg Mountains, treatments are inspired from the four seasons of the year. As guests walk into the spa they walk over the bridge of serenity and their journey into a world of rejuvenation and relaxation begins. The Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Spa Awards Boutique Hotel Spa Finalists were:

Pevonia Spa at Banskia Boutique. “Celebrating the art of living well & turning it into a lifestyle philosophy”- is the mission of The Spa at Banksia. The spa décor is reminiscent of Hollywood glamour with crystal chandeliers, magnificent mirrors and palates of cream and white. Located in a separate loft area overlooking the Victorian manor house and gardens, the Spa has three treatment rooms and a Rasul.

The Residence Spa is located in the historic suburb of Houghton, and exudes a charming air of quiet dignity, with an abundance of bougainvillea blossoms cascading down the terraced gardens. The Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Spa Awards Unique Spa Category Finalists were:

Africology Spa at The Maslow Hotel, Sandton Johannesburg has taken the holistic spa experience to a whole new level by introducing new therapies such as oxygen therapy, hydrotherapy and vitamin treatment boosters. Les Nouvelles Esthetiques would like to congratulate all the finalists and winners as they continue to excel in providing the South African community with the keys to relaxation and wellness. Spa Recognition Awards 2015

“We focus a large amount on the actual spas, however there are a number of individuals, as seen by the impressive list of nominees, who go above the call of duty and through their work the entire industry benefits. The Spa Recognition Awards include four categories, The Spa Ambassador Award, The Humanitarian Award, The Spa Visionary Award and Spa Management Excellence Award.

The Spa Ambassador Award goes to a person who has made the industry proud and whose presence in the industry is noted internationally. The Spa Ambassador Award 2015 was awarded to Celeste Peters. Celeste has been involved in standards, training and certification, including introducing the spa standard to South Africa for over 19 years. Her passion is people, empowerment and fairness and has introduced a number of enterprise development projects to the spa industry with enormous success

The Spa Humanitarian Award is awarded to a person / group who by definition is actively concerned in promoting human welfare. The 2015 humanitarian award was awarded to the Global Wellness Day Committee – The South African Spa Industry “Says Yes” to Global Wellness Day, a one-day event celebrating health and wellbeing, which took place on 13 June 2015. By offering a selection of awareness activities and treatment offerings, complemented by additionally raising funds for our official charity: Dance for a Cure, participating South African Spas stand united with hundreds of spas and wellness organizations in more than 55 countries from Turkey to Thailand to support proactive wellness. Global Wellness Day is based on the simple premise of increasing global consciousness of living a better life, even if it’s just for one day, by drawing a focus on healthier lifestyle choices.

Spa Visionary Award is awarded to a pioneer within the Spa Industry. A industry leader who has made truly outstanding contributions to the development of the Spa Industry over the past year and whose ideas have lead to a change or noted improvement in the spa industry. The Spa Visionary Award for 2015 was awarded to Lucille Ferreira – African Angels – touching hearts, changing lives. African Angels Wellness Huts are available for placement in corporate and hospitality environments. The African Angels are previoulsy unemployed who are being mentored in a quality assured program which lead to international creditials on successful completion of ITEC examinations. African Angels who show the commitment and determination to succeed may be presented with the opportunity to own a Wellness Hut, creating proud business owners and qualified therapists.

The Spa Management Excellence Award is acknowledges the dynamic spa manager who best keeps the balance between a motivated team, good working environment, superb guest experience, profitability, and efficient spa operations, with appreciation of the role of the spa manager is one of the most challenging in this industry. The winner of the Spa Management Excellence Award 2015 was Taryn Lilley, Cape Grace Spa, located on the top floor of the Cape Grace Hotel at the V & A Waterfront, Cape Town. Taryn inspires and motivates her team beyond the call of duty and contributes to the spa industry, through her writing, consulting and participation on the South African Spa Association Board.

We look forward to hosting the Spa Awards in 2016 and Spa Recognition Awards 2016, as South African Spas and individuals continue to flourish in an internationally growing market place.

The Spa Recognition Awards, are a true reflection of the Spa Industry’s opinion, as individuals are nominated and voted for by the spa industry in their individual categories”, said Dr Nadine de Freitas. These Spa Recognition Awards include four categories, The Spa Ambassador Award, The Humanitarian Award, The Spa Visionary Award and Spa Management Excellence Award.

The Spa Ambassador Award goes to a person who has made the industry proud and whose presence in the industry is noted internationally. The Spa Ambassador Award 2014 was awarded to Alison Yammin, Marine Spa Distributors. Alison’s vision is one of perfection and superiority of her brands. She believes in quality, the experience and a good presentation. Additionally she won the Think Big Award at Mega Partnering Africa, in association with JT Foxx, founder of Mega Partnering and serial entrepreneur, considered the world no 2 wealth coach, with business interests spread throughout the world. The Spa Humanitarian Award is awarded to a person who by definition is actively concerned in promoting human welfare. The 2014 humanitarian award was awarded to Ian Macfarlane – Cape Town Medi-Spa and Ubuntu Touch Project – Ubuntu Touch Upliftment Project is the Medi-Spa Wellness Academy’s flagship project. It was launched in November 2012 and provides training opportunities for women from disadvantaged communities and also to enhance the wellness of the corporate sector, with a special focus on the call centre industry. The training is directly linked to employment opportunities. Spa Visionary Award is awarded to a pioneer within the Spa Industry. A industry leader who has made truly outstanding contributions to the development of the Spa Industry over the past year and whose ideas have lead to a change or noted improvement in the spa industry. The Spa Visionary Award for 2014 was awarded to Lisa Smit – LS Enterprises / Theravine. Lisa worked with various different sectors to formulate the TheraVine™ Skin and Body Care Range as it is seen today. Development and research started in 1989 where she worked with top international development chemists, viticulturists and botanists from the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. 5 years were dedicated to establishing a suitable market position followed by 10 years committed to zone in on creating a highly active anti-oxidant product range which in the end led to the successful launch of TheraVine™ in 2004. The growth and expansion of the product is reflected through its presence in most of the industry’s leading spas in South Africa, as well as international representation through stockists and distributors of different continents.

The Spa Management Excellence Award is acknowledges the dynamic spa manager who best keeps the balance between a motivated team, good working environment, superb guest experience, profitability, and efficient spa operations, with appreciation of the role of the spa manager is one of the most challenging in this industry. The winner of the Spa Management Excellence Award 2014 was Jackie Armitage, The Oyster Box Spa, one of the countries busiest spas and two times winner of Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Spa Award in the Hotel Spa Category.

The Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Spa Awards Gala Dinner evening was filled with excitement and glamour as some of the industries most respected and well-known names and media came together to acknowledge their peers. In keeping with the Indian theme, bollywood dancers, décor, an traditional taste extravanganza buffet, followed by energetic entertainment from Funeka and Si-Anne, guest were kept enthralled throughout the evening.

The Spa Humanitarian Award is awarded to a person who by definition is actively concerned in promoting human welfare. The 2013 humanitarian award was awarded to Margaret Hewson – Programme Director for the Look Good, Feel Better Foundation for the past 10 years. The foundation is dedicated to helping women undergoing active cancer treatment overcome the distressing appearance-related side effects of their treatment. It aims to improve their self-esteem, self-confidence and quality of life through beauty workshops that teach them how to make the best of their appearance. The Look Good … Feel Better programme is offered in 23 countries worldwide. Each country operates independently but shares the same common goal.

The Spa Visionary Award is awarded to a pioneer within the Spa Industry. A industry leader who has made truly outstanding contributions to the development of the Spa Industry over the past year and whose ideas have lead to a change or noted improvement in the spa industry. The Spa Visionary Award for 2013 was awarded to Lee Ann Barker from Brands for Change. The “World friendly” Product lines create ethical employment in South Africa, fundraise for result driven conservation, humanitarian & environmental projects whilst supporting community upliftment. Partnering with the SA Spa Association, through the Industry Development Initiative, Brands for Change has created a platform to develop our spa talent and also assist the millions of children who are in need of shoes in South Africa.

The newly introduced Spa Management Excellence Award is acknowledges the dynamic spa manager who best keeps the balance between a motivated team, good working environment, superb guest experience, profitability, and efficient spa operations, with appreciation of the role of the spa manager is one of the most challenging in this industry.

The winner of the Spa Management Excellence Award 2013 was Fiona van der Haer, Shambala Wellness Centre, Port Elizabeth. Fiona has a natural way to make her guests feel at home and gives her therapists confidence to perform an effective efficient set of treatments. Her advice to guests and therapists supports her wellness approach to ensure guests get the best. Her innovative staff development ideas, build a great team spirit and ensure continuous staff development and improved retention.

“We focus a large amount on the actual spas, however there are a number of individuals, as seen by the impressive list of nominees, who go above the call of duty and through their work the entire industry benefits. The Spa Recognition Awards, are a true reflection of the Spa Industry’s opinion, as individuals are nominated and voted for by the spa industry in their individual categories”, said Dr Nadine de Freitas. These Spa Recognition Awards include four categories, The Spa Ambassador Award, The Humanitarian Award, The Spa Visionary Award and the newly introduced Spa Management Excellence Award.

The Spa Ambassador Award goes to a person who has made the industry proud and whose presence in the industry is noted internationally. The Spa Ambassador Award 2011 was awarded to Elsa Kruger from Shape Magazine. Elsa Kruger has constantly held the flag high for the spa industry and supported the SA Spa Association on all occassions, including ensuring the continued success of the Spa Index. Elsa has been fair in her assessment of spas and spa products, ensuring the Shape reader is informed and enthusiastic about their next spa visit. The Spa Humanitarian Award is awarded to a person who by definition is actively concerned in promoting human welfare. The 2012 humanitarian award was awarded to Donald Perry from Duma Manzi Eco Lodge & Spa. Donald is an innovator and a man to be acknowledged for the ecologically sensitive manner in which he has developed Duma Manzi Eco Lodge & Spa. This eco development uses only eco friendly products, consumes only clean green energy, uses local supplies and building materials, support the local community, and is certainly one Kwa-Zulu Natal’s flagship establishments, from marketing to eco-operations. Recently Donald has also been nominated as Chairman of Richmond Tourism to drive the industry in this area. Creating new areas for tourism and developing sustainable employment in this poverty stricken rural area. The Spa Visionary Award is awarded to a pioneer within the Spa Industry. A industry leader who has made truly outstanding contributions to the development of the Spa Industry over the past year and whose ideas have lead to a change or noted improvement in the spa industry. The Spa Visionary Award for 2012 was awarded to Renchia Droganis from Africology. Renchia started her career as a life coach and holistic healer. After she trained as a Reiki master and aromatherapist, she incorporated homemade, bespoke skincare products that contain essential oils in her therapies, which were a huge hit with her clients. When a spa approached her to make a body wrap, she took on the challenge and launched Africology, which has grown steadily since its beginnings in 2001. The Africology range is completely chemical-free and can be found in some of the most luxurious spas around the world. Renchia’s four children are also involved in the business, which makes Africology a true family business.

The newly introduced Spa Management Excellence Award is acknowledges the dynamic spa manager who best keeps the balance between a motivated team, good working environment, superb guest experience, profitability, and efficient spa operations, with appreciation of the role of the spa manager is one of the most challenging in this industry. The runner –up was Beverley Reid – Camelot Spa Royal Swazi Spa, Beverley is described by her team as ‘understanding, unselfish and friendly’. She has brought continuous success and increased revenue to the spa, always exceeding expectations; while her proactive and responsible nature ensures the property is run at the highest standards.. And the winner of the Spa Management Excellence Award 2012 was Ilze Bowen, Spa de la Veille. Committed to professionalism and spa excellence. Ilze leads her team with professionalism, encouragement and support. She is committed to training, and encourages each staff member, to achieve their fullest potential, in addition to attending all trainings and further spa education courses herself. The spas are run with precision and attention to detail, allowing each client to relax and enjoy their experience without a concern.

The Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Spa Awards Gala Dinner evening, guided by Master of Ceremonies, Peter Krug, was filled with excitement and glamour as some of the industries most respected and well-known names and media came together to acknowledge their peers. In keeping with the Asian theme, the evening began with the traditional Dragon Dance by the Chung Wah Dragon Dance Troop and Martial Arts Demonstration, followed by entertainment by Si-Anne and Funeka.

The 2011 Spa Awards consisted of five (5) Categories, namely Boutique Hotel Spas, Day Spa, Resort/Hotel Spa, Unique Spa Concept and Safari Spa categories.

These Spa Recognition Awards include four categories, The Spa Ambassador Award, The Humanitarian Award, The Spa Visionary Award and the newly introduced Spa Management Excellence Award.

The Spa Ambassador Award goes to a person who has made the industry proud and whose presence in the industry is noted internationally. The Spa Ambassador Award 2010 was awarded to Mark Barkett of the Spas of Distinction. Mark Barkett is the pioneer behind the Spas of Distinction, a group boasting some of the countries best spas. The Spas of Distinction Collection was created to unify a successful group of unique family owned day spas under one umbrella brand. Each of the spas have won numerous awards and rave reviews from various industries and regular clients who choose to make the Spas of Distinction their spas choice when seeking pampering, relaxation and rejuvenation. The Spa Humanitarian Award is awarded to a person who by definition is actively concerned in promoting human welfare. The 2011 humanitarian award was awarded to Carina Franck from Kalahari Spas. Carina Franck, a successful business person and international ambassador for South African Skincare. Kalahari Spa has initiated the Kalahari Beads Project in conjunction with various Khoi San communities. These communities make delicate traditional Ostrich Egg Shell Beads, which are used to assemble unique bracelets, by disadvantaged women, which are sold and distributed internationally by Kalahari. The proceeds from the sale of these bracelets go towards supporting participating Khoi San families in Namibia, Botswana and South Africa. The Kalahari Bead Project will help raise awareness and bring a better understanding, appreciation and respect for the Khoi San. The Spa Visionary Award is awarded to a pioneer within the Spa Industry. A industry leader who has made truly outstanding contributions to the development of the Spa Industry over the past year and whose ideas have lead to a change or noted improvement in the spa industry. The Spa Visionary Award for 2010 was awarded to Emmy Stoltz of Spa Fusion. With a comprehensive background as a skincare therapist and spa manager for a number of spas, combined with the experience as Director of Training & Professional Development for Elemis, including the placement of Elemis in top spas and the Woolworths Beauty Departments. Emmy has combined her respective skills and experience to offers innovative mentorship programmes & consultancy to some of the countries top spas, each of which thank Emmy for her constant support, encouragement and innovative ideas, which have tangibly made a difference to each spa’s operations and development.

The newly introduced Spa Management Excellence Award is acknowledges the dynamic spa manager who best keeps the balance between a motivated team, good working environment, superb guest experience, profitability, and efficient spa operations, with appreciation of the role of the spa manager is one of the most challenging in this industry. The runner –up was Corli Schoeman from Tswalu Kalahari Spa, who represents both her spa passion and leadership with skill and professionalism. And the winner of the Spa Management Excellence Award 2011 was Francicso Caceres Garcia of Mount Grace Country House & Spa. Francisco is a charming host. He is efficient, polite and wonderful with guests, suppliers and staff alike. Francisco is highly attentive and innovative and is always balancing the needs of his guests with the demands of the facility and the staff. One never feels under pressure, and he always has time to give the extra attention that keeps guests coming back to Mount Grace Spa. The staff reflects his enthusiasm and commitment, which is testimony to his leadership skills.

The 6th annual Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Spa Awards hosted by Les Nouvelles Esthetiques South Africa in association with Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Paris, on Sunday the 17 October 2010, at the prestigious Hyatt Hotel, Rosebank, Johannesburg.

The Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Spa Awards Gala Dinner evening was filled with excitement and glamour as some of the industries most respected and well-known names came together to acknowledge their peers.

Through the success of the previous awards, the Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Spa Awards increases in its stature each year, providing the South African and International Spa Visitors and Media with a comprehensive choice of award winning spas, and a reliable source of spa information and recommendations, within South Africa.

The 2010 Spa Awards consisted of five (5) Categories, namely Boutique Hotel Spas, Day Spa, Resort/Hotel Spa, Unique Spa Concept and Safari Spa categories.

The Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Spa Awards Day Spa Category Finalists were The Classique Spa, situated in Norwood, Johannesburg, offering a private Victorian spa setting. The Classique Spa has created a sense of elegant timelessness and an unsurpassed quality of service, combined with SA’s only true Dead Sea salt floatation pool. Danika Spa located in the heart of Klerksdorp, where the focus is on privacy and the total spa experience, as all guests are treated as royalty. Jiva Grande Spa at The TAJ, Cape Town where guests are invited to experience a spectrum of traditional Ayverdic wellness treatments in a tranquil ambience was announced as the winner of the Unique Spa Concept Category. An invitation to experience a therapeutic journey of relaxation through original Thai massage and Professional Beauty Spa Treatments, as one embarks on peace and tranquility to relax and restore body and mind. A homely ambiance offering sincerity and Thai smiles. Ingaadi Spa and Event Venue, located East of Pretoria, Ingaadi is a place of many moods. A Special Mention Award in the Resorts / Hotel Spa Category was presented to The Hydro at Stellenbosch. South Africa’s first true Health Hydro, which has not only carved its place in history, but renewed itself, as much as the many clients that have walked through the door. “Les Nouvelles Esthetiques thought these ground breaking steps should be acknowledged as they have in essence paved the way for the entire spa industry as we know it today.” explained Dr Nadine de Freitas. “We focus a large amount on the actual spas, however there are a number of individuals, as seen by the impressive list of nominees, who go above the call of duty and through their work the entire industry benefits”, said Dr Nadine de Freitas. These Spa Recognition Awards include three categories, The Spa Ambassador Award, The Humanitarian Award and The Spa Visionary Award.

The award goes to a person who has made the industry proud and whose presence in the industry is noted internationally. The Spa Ambassador Award 2010 was awarded to Ronleigh Gordon, from Amani African Spas for her role in constantly introducing new spa concepts, such as Salt Therapy, mobile spas on the Premiere trains, Safari Spas, etc. Amani African Spas is the second largest spa operator in SA, with 14 spas and over 60 therapists employed nationally. The Spa Humanitarian Award is awarded to a person who by definition is actively concerned in promoting human welfare. The 2010 award was awarded to Lientjies van der Vyver, from Camelot Spas. In August 2009 Lientjies started FEET (ForeverEncourageEquipTogether ) charity. FEET’s vision is to set-up Houses of Hope for disadvantaged children under 18 years. Its first project is in Lotus River, Western Cape. The vision is to offer: ‘Yes’-pre-school for 3-6 year old children; Teen-age life skills lessons; food 5 days a week, Word4Word reading programme in afternoons, etc. Lientjies believes “One can make a difference & everyone should try.” The Spa Visionary Award is awarded to a pioneer within the Spa Industry. A industry leader who has made truly outstanding contributions to the development of the Spa Industry over the past year and whose ideas have lead to a change or noted improvement in the spa industry. The Spa Visionary Award for 2010 was awarded to Charne le Roux, the pioneer of the Green Initiatives in the Spa Industry. Charne opened the first award winning organic Spa in 2008, Vygenhoek Organic Spa and consequently has been invited to speak on the subject of green spas at major local spa conferences. Recently, been invited to Congress of the Green Spa Network in the USA. Charne is accredited by the Green Building Council of South Africa and a member of the Slow Food Movement. Charne is the author of the first comprehensive guide to spas and wellness retreats dealing with issues concerning sustainability, green building, fair trade, organic cosmetics and slow food principles, titled the Green Spa Guide.
