This April looking at Cleansers & Cleansing
Why it’s important to cleanse
Daily cleansing removes traces of dirt, make up, excess oil, pollution, & dead skin cells off of your face. Allowing dirt and pollution to accumulate on your skin could potentially contribute to breakouts, dehydration and premature aging.
When and how often to cleanse
Cleanse with a skin pH-friendly cleanser of pH 5,5 at least once a day to remove impurities from the skin.
Don’t over cleanse – washing your face too much can overstimulate oil secretion, causing enlarged pores, shiny appearance and possible break outs.
Never sleep with your make up on – make up holds dirt and oil close to the skin. Not removing make up before bedtime, leaves your pores clogged and can cause break outs and congestion.
Your skin repairs and regenerates itself while you sleep – a clean skin facilitates radiant and healthy-looking skin

What does it mean to be soap free?
Soap is usually made with sodium hydroxide or a similar strong alkali therefore the pH of soap is generally very high (pH7-14). To be “Soap-Free” means that a cleanser is made up of other ingredients which results in a lower pH of 5.5. (Which is closer to the skins natural pH)
What are surfactants?
Surfactants help to degrease and emulsify oils on the skin, allowing them to be easily washed away. Surfactants are used in most cleansers and many are considered gentle and effective for most skin types.
Acids in cleansers
Acids are great to use in a cleanser because of their pH – they do not strip the skin. They also have an exfoliating effect dissolving dead skin cells on the surface and stimulating cell regeneration in the lower layers. They also provide a gentle deep cleansing effect for the skin.
pH of cleansers
Our skins have got the pH of 5.5 – this means that our skins prefer a more acidic environment. The higher the pH of the cleanser – the less compatible it is for the skin. A high pH is more alkaline which ends up stripping the natural acid mantle on the surface of our skins – leaving our skins feeling tight, dry and prone to microbial invasion. A cleanser with a pH that meets the skins pH is incredibly compatible with our skins and leaves our skins balanced, protected and more hydrated.
