An Industry Award, acknowledging individuals who have excelled in the spa industry.

Les Nouvelles Esthetiques South Africa, introduced the inaugural Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Spa Recognition Awards in 2006 to recognise these phenomenal individuals and each year we look forward to acknowledging their achievements.” said Dr Nadine de Freitas (Managing Editor – Les Nouvelles Esthetiques SA).
The Spa Recognition Awards, reflects the Spa Industry’s opinion and acknowledge these people in their individual categories:
The Spa Ambassador Award,
The Spa Humanitarian Award
The Spa Visionary Award and
The Spa Management Excellence Award
We therefore encourage the spa industry to vote for the below nominees.
The Spa Management Excellence Award Nominations
1. Vicky Dennett – Ellerman House
Vicky has been with at Ellerman House for 8 years since 2004 December , taking the spa systematically from strength to strength. She started off with one therapist and now they have four therapists – she is the perfect hands on manager and also still does treatments and manages her spa effective and efficiently.
2. Ilze Bowen – Spa de la Veille
Committed to professionalism and spa excellence. Diana leads her team with professionalism, encouragement and support. She is committed to training, and encourages each staff member, to achieve their fullest potential, in addition to attending all trainings and further spa education courses herself. Diana’s spas are run with precision and attention to detail, allowing each client to relax and enjoy their experience without a concern.
3. Chantelle Parsons – Amani Spa – Radisson Blu
Chantelle carries a wealth of international spa experience and although recently started with the Amani Spas, she has immediately motivated her staff, increased the spa productivity, addressed challenges with style and embraced the spa and corporate clients. Chantelle is a pleasure to work with, carries responsibility and introduces innovation.
4. Kim Franco – Life Day Spa Rosebank
Kim goes the extra mile in all aspects of the Spa. She is a joy to behold. Her staff, even while she was still in training, supported her without hesitation.
5. Beverley Reid – Camelot Spa Royal Swazi Spa
Beverley is described by her team as ‘understanding, unselfish and friendly’. She is a vibrant, gracious individual who inspires her large team on a daily basis by encouraging a positive attitude, being considerate and a good leader thereby ensuring a happy team environment and satisfied guests. Beverly is always seen welcoming guests to the spa, is always approachable and thereby sets an excellent example to her team.
She has brought continuous success and increased revenue to the spa, always exceeding expectations; while her proactive and responsible nature ensures the property is run at the highest standards.
6. Rene Baatjies – The Spa at the Twelve Apostles
“Rene has been associated with The 12 Apostles Spa for many successful years. She consistently inspires and motivates her team to surpass client’s expectations and maximize revenue. They thrive on her enthusiasm, dedication and passion for the industry and she is well respected amongst her team, colleagues and industry peers.
Rene’s attitude and unrelenting passion for the client experience ensures we surpass expectations every treatment. I wholeheartedly applaud Rene and I am delighted that she has been nominated for this award. Brett Davidge – Hotel Manager
7. Wendy Lewandowski – Skin Spa Manager, Clarins Skin Spa
Wendy has been the Skin Spa Manager at the Clarins Skin Spa since February 2011. During this time, Wendy has become the right hand (wo)man, taking much stress from Clarins management and managing the team with efficiency and expertise. Wendy has created a wonderful team spirit and motivation in our Skin Spa with her people skills and style of management. With open communication, high standards and passion for her work, Wendy has excelled in every aspect of her role. Through all her hard work, we have seen a 20% growth in our figures since Wendy came on board. We are very proud to have her managing our Skin Spa team!
Spa Visionary Nominations
1. Renchia Droganis
Renchia started her career as a life coach and holistic healer for leading companies, and also worked together with state prosecutors to help empower victims to find the mental strength to testify in court. After she trained as a Reiki master and aromatherapist, she incorporated homemade, bespoke skincare products that contain essential oils in her therapies, which were a huge hit with her clients. When a spa approached her to make a body wrap, she took on the challenge and launched Africology, which has grown steadily since its beginnings in 2001.
The Africology range is completely chemical-free and can be found in some of the most luxurious spas around the world. Renchia has got four grown-up children and all of them are involved in the business, which makes Africology a true family business.
2. Chris Parker – esp
Chris has brought a vision of professionalism to the industry that he embodies as a person. Through his unique approach ESP Software has developed systems and Best Business Practices that change the way people within the industry think about the way they go about their business.
His style is to listen very closely to the needs of the industry and once a complete picture is formed he then brings forward a well formed solution. I am sure that anyone that has had the pleasure of interacting with Chris will understand this point and how rare it is to find someone who embodies this trait.
With over a decade in the industry, Chris has set a standard that encourages Spas to go even further and as a Director of ESP we highly value his integrity and vision and look forward to the next chapter that he is already writing about and that we will see unfold over the next few years as communication and computerization transform expand the ways in which Spa’s interact with their clients.
3. Alison Rightford – Sanctuary Spas
As a consultant to the spa industry for over 20 years Alison has worked with top architects and interior decorators to design numerous award winning spas with international acclaim.
The Sanctuary spas in South Africa and Mozambique, including various Rani Resorts Spas, are respected as benchmarks in the industry.
Alison was involved in the design, setup and operation of the The Sanctuary Spa at the Twelve Apostles Hotel for 7 years, as well as the design and setup of the well-known Spa at Saxon Boutique Hotel (JHB).
Alison prides herself on the company’s high standards and ability to maximize turnover through marketing and delivering consistent great service with highly trained and skilled therapists.
Spa Ambassador Nominations
1. Celeste Peters – TUV Rheinland
Public Relations for TUV Rheinland, Celeste completely immersed herself in the new challenge of the spa industry development in South Africa and certification, as the spa certification and wellness models were released from Germany. Her aim has been to ensure all South African Spas conform to international standards, and more importantly, have systems which allow them to excel and improve, each in their own right.
Celeste has repeated given selflessly to the spa industry, promoted education opportunities, plays an active role on the SA Spa Association, and is consistently a bundle encouraging energy focussed on spa success.
2. Lisa Smit – Theravine / LS Enterprises
Lisa, a visionary and entrepreneur, she had the drive and dedication to create what L.S. ENTERPRISES is today. She contributes 18 years of passion within the health spa industry, her unique ability and skill to create extra-ordinary, unique spa treatment protocols, and her in-depth product knowledge to develop unique product lines accordingly. Lisa is highly regarded in the industry and press for being an innovator and industry trendsetter.
3. Elsa Kruger – Shape Magazine
Elsa Kruger has constantly held the flag high for the spa industry and supported the SA Spa Association on all occassions, including ensuring the continued success of the Spa Index. Elsa has been fair in her assessment of spas and spa products, ensuring the Shape reader is informed and enthusiastic about their next spa visit.
Spa Humanitarian Nominations
1. Trevor Steyn from Esse Cosmetics
Trevor has shown persistence and commitment in the groundbreaking steps of Organic Skincare, overcoming numerous obstacles. His dedication through education and sharing to making the planet a cleaner and better place has been unwavering.
2. Christina O’Gorman – National Institute of the Deaf College
Facilitator National Institute of the Deaf College in Worchester, giving each of their massage therapists the opportunity to excel in the spa industry. This year for the first time in South African history, a Deaf student, Lazyja Le Roux has been awarded the City and Guilds International Lion Award as the Best International Student.
3. Donald Perry – Duma Manzi Eco Lodge & Spa
Donald is an innovator and a man to be acknowledged for the ecologically sensitive manner in which he has developed Duma Manzi Eco Lodge & Spa. This eco development uses only eco friendly products, consumes only clean green energy, uses local supplies and building materials, support the local community, and is certainly one Kwa-Zulu Natal’s flagship establishments, from marketing to eco-operations. The Cecil John Rhodes Heritage site, has been developed in a true haven escape.
Recently Donald has also been nominated as Chairman of Richmond Tourism to drive the industry in this area. Creating new areas for tourism and developing sustainable employment in poverty stricken rural areas.
4. Mrs Sekgopi Nyhonhy – Pelonngwe Wellness
Pelonngwe wellness and spa model is not focused on the traditional pampering approach in its spa treatments. At Pelonngwe wellness – the focus is on the clients emotional, physical and social needs. A holistic health screen analysis is performed by a medical doctor onsite and a tailored wellness programme is designed based on the results of the health analysis.
In addition, Pelonngwe wellness and spa uses innovative equipment in their treatments. I believe the spa set up and the professionalism of the consultants promotes social change and wholeness in wellbeing of their clients.
